Scouting Maine: Four hotels, four totally different experiences Along the Southern Coast

“Now more than ever do I realize that I will never be content with a sedentary life, that I will always be haunted by thoughts of a sun-drenched elsewhere.” — Isabelle Eberhardt

I’m recently back from a few days in coastal Maine checking out properties in the area, meeting with partners, and making sure I walked away with fresh recommendations for clients. One of the things I love about exploring hotels firsthand is discovering how differently a destination can be experienced depending on where you stay. During this trip, I visited four properties across Ogunquit and Kennebunkport and each had their own appeal but offered a completely different experience.

  1. The Cliff House - For dramatic ocean views and a full-service resort experience: An expansive cliff-side resort, this property has dramatic sweeping views, stunning grounds, resort amenities, a spa, and multiple on-site dining options. I spent two nights at The Cliff House in a deluxe oceanfront room - this hotel is ideal for someone who wants the views to be the main event without sacrificing the comforts of a full-service luxury resort.

  2. The Dunes on the Waterfront - For a classic Maine escape: This is one I had been dying to visit since it reopened in 2024 under the ownership of Atlantic Hospitality Group - the same group that owns and operates one of my favorite hotels in Maine, The Claremont. I overnighted in one of their 22 cottages onsite and quickly embraced the feeling of classic, cozy cottage living. It was peaceful and relaxed with views of the Ogunquit river, a pool for swimming, a roaring bonfire at night, and coffee, fresh muffins, and a newspaper delivered to your doorstep each morning. It's a different kind of getaway from a traditional resort and the type of place that would work well for families, couples, or girls trip.

  3. White Barn Inn - For intimate luxury and a special occasion: The White Barn by Auberge offers a more intimate inn experience. It gives understated elegance and a sense of occasion. The dining experience here was an absolute masterclass and very, very memorable. A beautiful spot for a one or two night stay as a couple. The White Barn also has four houseboats and four cottages for rent during the warmer months for a really unique experience on the water in downtown Kennebunkport.

  4. Hidden Pond - for a secluded retreat surrounded by nature: Set on 60 acres, Hidden Pond is ideal for families or couples who want to feel removed from everyday life while remaining near the coast. The property has 45 newly renovated private cottages in the woods each outfitted in a coastal or woodsy decor. The setting has a wellness focus but is family-friendly and peaceful with dining, nature and kids programming onsite. There is also an adults-only section for those that want to unplug and enjoy an even more serene experience. This spot is “luxury summer camp” vibes all the way and offers a really unique Maine experience.

Loved getting to experience each of these unique properties during my September visit! They all offer a unique way to experience coastal Maine - it really comes down to whether you’re looking for a classic coastal escape, a special occasion getaway or a quieter luxury retreat in nature. Special shout-out to my husband Chris for being my sidekick on this trip - bonus that we got to celebrate our anniversary in this beautiful part of the country during this exceptionally beautiful time of year. Cheers to 15 years!
