South for Spring Break

"Live in the sunshine. Swim in the sea. Drink in the wild air." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

I was talking to a friend yesterday about last minute spring break ideas and it had be brainstorming about where I would go if I was planning something quickly and last minute. The weather here has been gray, icy, cold, and colder and I'm beyond ready to escape to somewhere warm for sunshine and relaxation. Our family heads to Puerto Rico next month for our spring break and it can't come soon enough. More on that trip to come, but if I was going to pick a destination for a last minute warm weather spring break getaway, here's where I would consider if near or on the east coast:

Amelia Island, FL

No secret here. Ritz Carlton Amelia Island is one of our favorite spots to go as a family for an easy, relaxing getaway. The resort boasts a beautiful beach, fantastic spa, activities for the kids, and the understated elegance you would expect from a Ritz property. Easy flight to Jacksonville and a 35 minute drive to the property. More about our review of the property and surrounding area here. Perfect spot for a 3-4 night getaway.

Charleston, SC

I am obsessed with Charleston. We've visited many times in the past and brought the kids (and our dog) there for spring break a few years ago. A dedicated blog post on this city is forthcoming. I love the food, the southern hospitality, and the overall charm and walkability of the city. Don't miss a coffee and breakfast downtown at the Harken Cafe, check out a Charleston Riverdogs game, and enjoy a beach day on Sullivan's Island while you're there.

Bluffton, SC

Situated 12 miles west of Hilton Head Island and approximately 30 minutes from the Savannah airport is the Montage Palmetto Bluff. Maybe most famously known as the place where Justin and Hailey Bieber got married (!), the Montage is a luxurious and classic southern escape along the May River. The resort is set within a gorgeous community that offers activities and lowcountry adventures for the whole family to enjoy. There are multiple pools, dining options with waterside views, and wellness offerings. And don't be surprised if you see dolphins playing in the surrounding waterways, this was a special highlight of our time spent there.

Watercolor, FL

We enjoyed spring break here last year and had the best time. Weather was gorgeous, lots to do, and a super easy, quick flight from the DC area. We stayed at the Watercolor Inn and it was a great jumping off point to explore all the amenities within the Watercolor community and nearby Seaside. More on our recent visit to Watercolor here. I've also heard great things about the Pearl Hotel in Rosemary Beach, which is another popular destination in 30A.

Costa Rica

So maybe this isn't a trip that could necessarily come together last minute (although anything is possible!), I know from personal experience that spring break in Costa Rica is definitely a good idea. You must stay at Nayara Tented Camp for the most special rainforest experience. It's probably in my top three most favorite resorts. And I've heard amazing things about the new Ritz Carlton Reserve property Nekajui Peninsula Papagayo in Guanacaste for beachside luxury. It's high on my list of places to check out.
